Join with Lutheran Campus Ministry staff and guests for the 2018 ELCA LuMin Conference in Portland, Oregon.  All campus ministry staff (part-time, full-time and retired) are encouraged to attend this important event where everyone benefits from connecting with and learning from each other and guests from Churchwide, synods, seminaries, and others serving in connection with LCM.


THEME AND SPEAKERS – “Finding Our Place”

Place matters. Where we live and work determines what we hold dear, values we hold in common, the needs of our neighbors, and faith practices that emerge from them. This year’s summer conference in Portland explores these ideas under the theme “Finding Our Place.”

Two long-serving Pacific Northwest pastors – Laurie Larson Caesar who serves Spirit of Grace, a community of Lutherans and Catholics together in Beaverton, OR, and John Rosenberg, Interim Director for Congregational Engagement at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA – will help us think deeply about how distinct characteristics of our home place shapes our ministries. Both have served as campus pastor at Portland State University so they understand our work and can speak with us as colleagues and friends. Their collaboration with other regional pastoral colleagues called “Practicing Our Faith in Salmon Nation” is a deep well of insights they will draw from as they share with us.

Through their presentation, and with time for reflection in small groups, John and Laurie will offer examples and tips on how their own journey of discovering the unique spiritual ethos of the Pacific Northwest led them to new and exciting ministry initiatives. They’ll invite us to join them on this journey of discovery so we’re better prepared to serve the communities of which we’re part when we return home.

Thursday afternoon, small group Urban Expeditions will take us to various ministries throughout the Portland metro area where communities of faith have “found their place” and creatively responded to their contexts. This exciting dimension of our gathering will add to our toolbox of skills and equip us to better imagine ministry possibilities for the people and places we serve.

If you enjoyed the weirdness of Austin last summer, it will continue in Portland, Oregon (i.e. Portlandia, where you can “Put a bird on it!”) this summer.   You won’t miss the heat of Austin, but you may be happy to see the sun by the end of the conference.   Knowing this crowd, rain will not stop the connections, collaborations, and contributions to life-giving ministry in which we all find ourselves placed.



University Place Hotel  & Conference Center (310 SW Lincoln Street) is located within close proximity to Portland State University.   Meeting and sleeping will be under one roof this year!

Double (two double beds) and single rooms, and 4 additional ADA rooms have been blocked for our group.  The double occupancy room rate is built into the cost of the conference, but there will be a $50 charge per night if you would like a single room. Register early if you prefer a single room.

Each room contains a private bathroom with shower/tub combinations, complimentary toiletries and hair dryers.  No need to bring sheets, towels or pillows this year.  Other amenities include wireless internet access, an outdoor pool, 24-hour fitness center at the hotel (free) and access to Portland State Campus Rec Center for a fee of  $15.00 per day for all hotel guests.


Check-In Time: Wednesday, June 20 between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.

  • Overflow parking is 5 blocks from the hotel

Additional Night Stay

Wednesday – Friday nights are paid through your conference fee, and you have the option to arrive Tuesday night for an additional $50 ($100 for single occupancy rooms).

Those registering for new staff orientation or who are part of any pre-conference gathering will have housing covered Monday – Friday nights.

If you plan to extend your stay beyond what is provided at the hotel, you are responsible for booking your additional nights through the Hotel website https://www.pdx.edu/university-place/   The conference rate ($79/economy room and $99/standard room) is valid 3 days pre and post-conference, based on availability.

  • Follow signs at baggage claim level to the light rail platform.
  • Near the platform, inside the airport, purchase ticket (2.5 hours, $2.50). The ticket is already validated.
  • Go to platform and board Red Line to City Center/Beaverton.
  • Exit train downtown at the 5th and Morrison stop (about 45 minutes from airport).
  • Head to 5th Avenue between Morrison and Yamhill to the Orange Line platform (shared with Green Line)
  • Board Orange Line train to Milwaukie
  • Exit train at Lincoln and 3rd stop (about 10 minutes).
  • University Place Hotel and Conference center is directly across from the platform. Use caution when crossing tracks as trains are quiet and cars share the travel lane.



The conference sessions, workshops, worship and most meals will take place under the same roof of the University Place Hotel & Conference Center.   We will venture out for an occasional meal and Urban Adventures so you may want to bring an umbrella just in case of rain.

A complimentary hot/cold buffet breakfast in the hotel is served on weekdays from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM and weekends from 7:30AM to 10:30 AM.

Plan on spending money for one evening meal on your own, cash bar at most meals, public transportation, and self-parking if needed.  Late night and free time activities are on your own as well.
